Anger Management Tips: How to Stop Reacting Sharply For Mental Health

Anger is a natural emotion; all of us have that emotion inside us. The only difference is how we deal with it.

When you are angry, what do you do? You yell, cry loudly, and begin to fight. These are all sharp reactions coming out of our anger. Well, some people do not show these emotions, however, most of us do.

Why You Should Not React Too Sharp

“Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.”

You read this in school, right? Well, we are not going to explain this Newton’s third law of motion, what we are doing is trying to analyze this motion law’s implication not just in science but in each walk of life. When two forces of equal strength collide (action), they will create an equal reaction. This is true in our social life as well. If you don’t believe me just watch two people quarreling or fist fighting. If this example is not enough, try to think about a situation when someone talked bad things about you. Your anger will be as much stronger as the magnitude of bad things someone is saying against you.

If you react sharply, quickly, it is very likely that you will be easily motivated by another person. Just imagine this. A person, let’s call him A, came to you and said this guy, let’s call him Mr. B, is talking bad things about you. You begin to react sharply, you start calling names to Mr. B. Now, you are playing at the hands of A because you don’t actually know whatever A is telling you is true or not.

Reacting too sharp means you are prone to motivation (in a bad sense, of course), you can easily have a bad influence. This also shows that you do not have analytical thinking capacity, or perhaps emotions like anger, arrogance, greed, etc. are deeply rooted inside you.

Sadly, you are not alone. A lot of people have this bad character. They are easily motivated by others just because they react quickly. It takes a lot of effort to reach a level where a person could stay calm while facing criticism or taking it positively.

Do You React Sharply? Why do You React Sharply?

If you go deeper into the matter, you will find that some people react before hearing the whole sentence or without even having an idea about the intention of the speaker. However, that makes the speaker upset because his intention was not to criticize the listener but he was only talking in a general way. It will hurt you in the beginning for sure but you will see that you are slowly getting closer to your object.

Now, the question arises of whether you can avoid the situation and stay calm while facing criticism? Yes, you can but you will have to work on your power of tolerance. You will have to learn how to control your feelings in such situations.

How Should React to Insulting Situations?

A person could face insulting situations in many ways like getting slapped, punched, spitted, etc. But there is nothing that hurts worse than a verbal insult whether it comes directly or indirectly.

Now, you come to another form of action, a verbal insult, the form of jokes mimicry or ironic comments, or even funny facial expressions could hurt as much as a direct insult. You will have to learn to control your emotions and how you react in a situation like that. How would you react in such cases?

It is natural for you to react sharply to the insults, even if the insults are the outcome of the mistakes you made. However, by reacting sharply, what is that you get? Satisfaction? Not exactly, you will feel more miserable.

When you are insulted, just laugh at the insults.

Perhaps, you might laugh at this suggestion but I think this is the best way of tackling situations like these. You will have to see who the person is and why he is doing so. Is he your well-wisher like our teacher, parents, a good friend, or someone who wants to destroy you?

If the insult is not from someone that you can ignore then what can you do about it? Should you react in the same manner? In such a case, you should handle them according to the situation.

How to Control Your Anger and Stay Normal

Reacting sharply means you are forcing your anger out of you that got accumulated after you were insulted or hurt. Is that the right way to deal with your anger?

Of course not!

A lot of people recommend sublimating anger with something creative. They believe that this is the easiest to control your anger

A lot of people find reading cathartic. If you have never tried this, you can see it for yourself. When you are angry at something, just shut the doors and start reading something. After the reading session, you will feel different.  The stories you read will give you a special sense of motivation, some might even make you think deeply even if you find yourself in a negative mindset after reading them. But good for you, you will manage to come out of negative feelings soon.

In case you cannot concentrate on reading when you are angry, is there an easy way to control your anger? There is, of course.

What do the professionals and the public figures, who have to deal with the crowd and have to face tons of uncomfortable moments, do when they are angry? They stay calm.

When a public figure shows anger publicly, it will destroy him. Therefore, choose to stay calm and deal with whatever unpleasant things try to push you back at that one bad moment pragmatically, rather than submit yourself to the bad memories and become poignant. Past is gone, there is no need to cry for spilled milk.

Can You Actually Stay Calm When You are Angry?

Let me ask you a simple question the young professionals – what do you do when you feel angry or irritated due to unfavorable questions from your clients and customers. Well, being angry is normal human behavior but keeping it in control is your responsibility.

If you ask me, I have a simple way of keeping my bad temper under control. I count backward starting from a hundred to zero and I forget all my anger. If it doesn’t work I take a glass of water and restart counting. You know, what is one of the simplest ways of getting relaxed? If you see a flower around, go and smell it. It’s one sure-shot way of getting rid of anger instantly.

When you are angry take a long breath and take a moment to ponder the situation. Time never remains the same but life is full of ups and downs. You have to cope with all situations that take your turn, especially when bad incidents happen.

I know it’s not going to be in your favor all the time but you should think of a positive and clear-cut way. As a professional, you will have to deal with all kinds of situations. You will have to stay on the ground during your good days and try never to look down during your bad days.

Well, you don’t meet good people always, you will have to deal with a lot of bad people in your life. You do not meet true well-wishers in such a mean world anymore, not every day at least. You should count yourself lucky if you have quite a few good people around. Those people actually make you feel valued.

When you know how to control your anger, you will see a lot of positive changes in your personal and professional life. You will have a good relationship with your spouse, your kids will love you, you will be admired in your workplace, and you will get a lot of prospects. You are always happy and contended. You excel in your career.

Individuals, who can remain calm and relaxed even in the worst-case scenarios are never stressed out, therefore, they are also more efficient in their work. Therefore, everything comes naturally, even a promotion in the workplace (because he is favored by everyone).
